Which areas hurt the least for a tattoo?
If you ask a tattoo lover if it hurt to decorate their body, they will most likely say no. The truth is, getting a tattoo is such a special experience that discomfort becomes secondary.
It is also true that sensations are always subjective, and what some remember as painful, others may not have noticed at all.
Areas closer to the bones usually hurt more. The skin there is thinner, less taut, has more nerve endings, and less fat.
If I have low pain tolerance, where should I tattoo?
Our recommendation is to follow what you really want. If you’ve always wanted a tattoo on a specific part of your body, go for it.
A tattoo is for life; it is a memory and a part of you. Tattooing a place you don’t like is a permanent reminder that it’s not where you wanted it.
If the tattoo itself matters more than the location, take note of the areas with the least discomfort:
-
Front thigh: usually has enough fat and few nerve endings, making discomfort tolerable.
-
Forearm: tight, thick skin with lots of muscles. Nerve endings are less present, and pain is usually moderate or low.
-
Outer shoulders: similar to the forearm. Few nerve endings and thick, tight skin, perfect for tattooing.
-
Outer biceps: pain is moderate in this muscular area with few nerve endings.
-
Calves: known for low discomfort when tattooing.
-
Back: not all areas of the back are equal. The upper and lower back are easier, while the spine and hip areas should be avoided to minimize pain.
-
Buttocks: not very common, but very tolerable. One of the least painful areas to tattoo.
Of course, this is based on a standard. Everyone experiences pain differently.
Factors like age, body fat, and previous experiences also greatly influence perceived discomfort.
So, the areas that usually hurt the least are those mentioned above, but it’s normal if your perception is different.
