What is tattoo ink made of?

Tattoo ink, along with the tattoo artist and the tattoo machine, is what determines the final quality of the creation.

If you’re looking for a tattoo and piercing studio in central Madrid, welcome to 222 Tattoo Madrid.

Why is tattoo ink permanent?

Actually, it’s not the ink itself that’s permanent, but the way it’s applied to the skin. It’s the tattoo machine that makes it permanent:

  • The needles deposit the ink below the epidermis. The epidermis is the layer of skin that renews itself.

  • By placing the ink in the dermis, it doesn’t get removed because it’s a deeper layer that doesn’t regenerate.

  • This ensures that the tattoo does not fade.

Of course, there are cases where the design starts to fade. That’s why the artist’s technique is so important, and why you should always go to authorized, experienced professionals.

What is tattoo ink made of?

At 222 Tattoo Madrid, the ink we use is body-friendly. For tattoos, microblading, and piercings, we only use materials that protect your health.

Ink components have changed over time. In the past, they included heavy metals that could cause allergies. Today, they are completely safe:

  • In Europe, tattoo inks are regulated by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

  • This regulation ensures that tattoo ink is safe and poses no health risks.

Composition by color

Did you know that ink composition depends on its color?

Just like in other arts, we get pigment shades from different sources. The same applies to tattoo inks:

  • Black: the most used ink, mainly made of carbon. It contains no metals and rarely causes allergic reactions. It’s also the easiest to remove with a laser.

  • Red: completely safe; for over five years, synthetic and organic alternatives have replaced the old mercury.

  • Blue: formerly contained cobalt, now replaced by health-safe components.

  • Yellow: cadmium was removed, which could cause mild and rare allergies.

  • Other colors: green, violet, brown, white… Previously contained chromium, magnesium, cadmium, titanium, etc. Now replaced by organic or synthetic alternatives.

If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo, don’t hesitate to book an appointment at our studio. We have a unique team of artists, and our tattoo ink, tools, and protocols are designed to protect your health.
