What is the proper care for a tattoo?

Tattoo aftercare is just as important as choosing the tattoo artist.
Proper healing and maintaining the quality of the design depend on how well we take care of it.

From our tattoo studio in central Madrid, 222 Tattoo Madrid, we have prepared this article with everything you need to know if you have just gotten a tattoo or are planning to.

Tattoo aftercare: a crucial phase

If we want the good appearance of our tattoo to last over time, aftercare is essential.

If you’ve already been tattooed, you’ll know there are different ways to do it, all equally good. Choosing one or another depends on the professional, who will recommend what is best for you.

However, all methods are quite similar and follow a standard:

  • The tattoo artist will first cover the area with a plastic film to protect the skin from bacteria, reducing the risk of infection.

  • This bandage should be kept for the time indicated, usually between 2 and 24 hours depending on the tattoo’s size, etc.

  • Afterwards, the skin must be cleaned as instructed.

Skin cleaning

Always wash your hands first. If you have antibacterial, fragrance-free soap, that’s best. Use it also for the tattooed area.

  • Carefully remove the plastic film. If there’s ink residue, don’t worry—it’s normal.

  • Gently clean the area with the recommended soap, without rubbing.

  • Pat dry with kitchen paper. Don’t use a regular towel, as it may leave fibers and dirt.

Repeat this process as many times as indicated in the studio—normally a couple of times a day.

Don’t forget hydration!

After washing and drying, moisturize the skin:

  • Apply a thin layer of tattoo ointment.

  • Avoid petroleum-based products as they clog pores.

  • Once healed, you can switch to your usual moisturizer.

  • If it’s fragrance-free, even better—for both tattoo and skin health.

Is cleaning and moisturizing enough?

Not quite. During the first week or two, additional precautions are needed:

  • Avoid sun exposure: brief walks are fine, but no sunbathing. UV rays damage both colors and healing skin. Once healed, always use sunscreen.

  • No swimming: avoid the sea, pools, hot tubs, or baths until healed. Prolonged immersion hinders healing and increases infection risks.

  • Don’t scratch! Healing causes itching, but scratching or picking scabs leads to scars and color loss.

  • Wear loose clothing: just like pat drying, this prevents irritation and allows proper healing.

See? Tattoo aftercare is simple!
It’s perfectly fine to get tattooed in summer—or anytime—if you follow these tips. And of course, at 222 Tattoo Madrid we’ll be happy to answer all your questions.
